Old Submarine by RadoJavor Old Submarine by RadoJavor
Just some newer picture done for my mate's project. Its a scene from post-apocalyptic future. The theme is really great for me, so there will be more pictures soon. Older damaged submarine is repaired to use it as energy source.

Done in some 25 hours, was a bit complicated painting. I used many photos of the actual dockyard for an inspiration.

I always have the utmost respect for any artist who can produce absolutely stunning pieces of digital work from scratch. This work here is no exception.

Although a lot of the objects in the scene are quite dark, the detail and forms of the objects are neatly picked out with strategically-placed shafts of light.

It doesn't just feel as though I'm looking at a flat image on a screen, here. I almost feel as though I can actually reach into the image. That, to me, is the making of a good piece of art when the viewer knows it's just a flat rendering, but is able to suspend their disbelief and almost imagine it to be real.

Another neat tough is how everything almost points to the left-hand centre of the backdrop.
What do you think?

I really like the way you used shadows and light sources in this picture. However, I'm confused as to how there is light streaming in from both sides, from the left, aka the sun, and right. Also, what is the puddle reflecting? On another note, the way that you used clouds, give the impression of movement and time passing.

Incredibly innovative, with a great sense of detail and composition.

Only critique is it seems kind of huge, like everything was scaled to one size and you added the people and railings in as an afterthought.

Nice work, the rim light on the nose of the sub looks a bit to sharp (very continuous) for my taste. It makes it seem cut out while you have all that nice , softer lighting and streaks elsewhere.

Since you requested critique for this piece that I accidentally stumbled upon while doing a google search for 'old submarines', here goes:

1) You'd want to detach the sub from the background. It kind of blends in too much with the sky at the right, and with the foreground shadow at the lower left. Since it blends in, it's pretty hard to miss all the detail on the nose and sides. Furthermore, you could either tone down, paint fog or plainly abandon the buildings behind the sub, as they take away much of it's shape by breaking down the hull's shape. On that same note, keep in mind that the foreground can be blurry if it's not important, especially if you're having so much detail on your main subject. The half-painted, half-doodle detail on the water, cranes and junk around your sub is distracting, and again, makes the pic messy. I would leave the shapes and forget about small-brush play.

2) Lights. Your artificial lighting has the same hue as the sunset, which isn't good. Using a cold light on those reflectors would make your picture look less flat and allow you to play with more colors. By the way, the reflection in the foreground is a bit impossible, unless you had the sun or a very brightly lit building in a direct vertical line over it. In this pic, you'd have the broken, looming crane reflected there. You also want to pay attention to how your lights work, as they're a bit messy as well.

3) Finally, again, try to keep your details to the main subject :). While the sub and the stuff under it looks absolutely gorgeous, the rest of the painting distracts the viewer from the main part. Remember that areas in shadows don't show as many detail as brightly lit areas, and that contours at a distance are more blurry.

There. I hope I didn't sound too harsh. It's a great mood piece, and the composition works great. It just needs a tad more work or a new, different approach :)
